Mezuzah Buying Guide: How to Choose and Hang the Right One?

Material, size, kashrut, design: the complete Eliorness guide to choosing and hanging your mezuzah with meaning and style.

The mezuzah is one of the most visible objects in Jewish life. Fixed to the doorpost, it is the first thing touched when entering and the last when leaving. This small case contains a sacred scroll — the klaf — on which the verses of the Shema Israel are written.

At Eliorness, we create mezuzah cases in stainless steel and acrylic, with signature designs like Aesh Cheli, Chicago, Vegas and more. This guide will help you make the right choice.

The klaf: what truly matters

Before choosing a case, let us recall the essential: the mezuzah is not the case, it is the scroll inside. A klaf must be:

  • Hand-written by a qualified sofer (scribe)
  • On kosher parchment (skin of a kosher animal)
  • Written with the 22 lines of the Shema and V'ahavta
  • Without errors — a single missing letter invalidates the mezuzah

Choosing the right case

Material

  • Stainless steel: robust, weather-resistant, ideal for exterior doors. Its matte or brushed appearance integrates into all modern interiors.
  • Acrylic: lightweight, translucent or colored, for a contemporary and original look. Perfect for interior doors.

Size

The case must measure at least 10 cm to accommodate a standard klaf. Our models generally measure 12 to 15 cm.

Design

  • Aesh Cheli — Rabbi Nachman's flame, available in steel or acrylic
  • Chicago — geometric and clean lines, urban style
  • Vegas — luminous and modern design
  • Classic Magen David — for those who prefer tradition

How to hang the mezuzah

  • Fixed on the right doorpost (as you enter)
  • At the upper third of the doorframe
  • Diagonal for Ashkenazim (top toward inside), vertical for Sephardim
  • Recite the blessing "Asher kideshanu..." before affixing it

The mezuzah as a gift

A mezuzah is one of the most meaningful gifts for a Hanukat Bayit, a wedding, or any move into a new home. Our mezuzot are delivered in careful gift packaging, with personalization options.

Maintenance

Clean the case with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Have the klaf checked by a sofer every two years — weather and humidity can deteriorate the parchment.
